Life Outside the Compound

Today Marks the day that the majority of the brick laying for the project has been completed with the walls being 24 courses high with the inner and outer skin finished... Hooray!

Arusha was promptly visited today after the camp experienced a MAJOR toilet roll shortage, thanks Kevlar. It was soon discovered when reaching the city that Tanzanian drivers have absolutely no knowledge of the highway code. After weaving through layers of traffic, we eventually reached the supermarket, promptly clearing 2 shelves of baked beans and grabbing the largest bag of loo roll we could find. The return journey consisted of a quick prayer for good luck, before heading out into the deadly maze of traffic which covered Arusha.

During Jack's escapade to Arusha, 2 Teams ventured into the Market of Mto Wa Mbu. Just one thing that James forgot to address was the fact that, because we all look like confused tourists, market men seem to love to follow us all the way through the Market, offering a better price for an item which we already turned down 10 minutes ago. My favourite part of it all though is when you buy something from one shop then go into another shop with the same thing you just bought, then have the man proceed to tell you that what you bought is fake and that's why it costs so little.

In other news for Camp murder, Me and Jack aren't Dead yet. Also, will Ellis' parents keep him updated with the Boro scores please, Thanks.

Thank you for reading tonight.

  3. Holly!!!!! It's wonderful seeing you get your hands dirty so to speak. Looking back over the photos it's amazing to see what the group have achieved and how Much it will mean to the locals.
You have done something that will last long after you have come home and finished college and university.
What you are doing now will shape who you are as a person and how you move on in life
    Will be forever influenced.
It sounds like you are all in high spirits most of the time but the vast differences in lifestyles is all too evident too.
Don't forget what a wonderful and lasting contribution you are all making to people's communities and lives.
Middlesbrough and 'youths' in general get such a bad name but people like you and projects like this make everyone so very proud.
Lots o love mama, papa and baby WGs

  5. Even though every picture tells a story, your stories certainly paint some interesting pictures. Poor Kevlar! Who's playing "Where's Wally?" trying to hide behind walls and ladders in the photos?

Here's some more messages and greetings for you all...

  6. Beans and long drops! What a combination! Building looks to be progressing well. Is Max Y actually there? Oh sorry he must be if you have run out of loo roll. A grande bonjour to Jack and Max from Mum and Dad and all your Solly family. Baked Camembert a la Podge in the river during canoe day yesterday was fantastique. Get in! Everyone is missing you both. Not the same without you. Jo & Steve York

  7. Paul found picture of you wielding a hammer unusually funny, last surgery of the week was amusing today, three bore holes into the guys head to release the CSF fluid left him looking like a bowling ball mixed with a water fountain as the pressurised fluid came out once again mimicking the Kevlar epidemic. Going away this weekend to near bennies place of origin, no wifi for two days and I'm going to be twitching no idea how you guys don't have full withdrawal going on two weeks in. Missing you relatively extortionately and half way through feels already too long. None the less your mums comment has it down pretty eloquently you're making an incrediable change that you'll be able to look back on for the rest of your life with pride. See you in two weeks ;)

  13. Like all us parents, I'm scouring the blog and photos for my son! Not much evidence so far. Archie- might have seen you on today's photos but not sure. We are missing you a lot - it's hard not having that 2-way communication but you are all doing an amazing thing. Grandma is reading the camp blog daily and telling Gina and Bethany all about it. We want you to try photo bombing - so we can see your face!! Love mum, dad and Davy xx

  15. Hi Molly. After many failed attempts and lots of frustration I've finally managed to publish a message. I've written loads that have vanished into the ether. Spotted you in a photo the other day. You look happy. Sounds as though you're getting used to Tanzanian life. Any more oversleeping on your part? Tall Ships last year, Tanzania this year, I wonder what's in store for 2018? All this escaping from home: perhaps you're trying to tell us something! Everyone here misses you, but at least I've stopped laying the table for one too many each mealtime. Love you "this much". Mum Kate

Glad to read you have been to the local market, I imagine it's not quite like cycling to Tesco. Enjoy continuing to build, it looks good in the photos. Lots of love from the Pearson relatives.
